VOCAL AND CHORAL WORKS OF COMPOSER BORYS LIATOSHYNSKYI IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 21ST CENTURY (USING AN EXAMPLE OF THE CANTATA “THE TESTAMENT”)

Abstract

The article describes the stylistic features of the choral writing and compositional work of Borys Liatoshinskyi using the example of the artistic and theoretical analysis of the cantata “The Testament”, which is filled with a wide variety of choral, expressive and symphonic means. Based on the research of many musicologists, the concept of modernism in music of the first half of the 20’th century and innovative musical techniques in the work of composers are summarized. The philosophy and art are compared as well as Ukrainian cultural formation of the 1920–1960’s based on the example of Borys Liatoshynskyi’s works and of his cantata “The Testament”. This composition presents individual features of the composer’s style: expressiveness, drama, layering of harmony, polyrhythm, dynamic performances of orchestral parts of all instrumental groups using expressive means in parallel with choral parts. So, a synthesis of symphonic and choral writing to the melody of H. Hladkov and poems of T. Shevchenko takes place, which creates a complete consonance of this music with the images and ideas of the poetry. The following idea is actualized: every piece of Borys Liatoshynskyi’s music is a work of high and professional art, which represents the core of Ukrainian music.
